I tried every BIOS option for the parallel port; I tried allowing Windows XP to install the driver; I installed the last official Iomega issue of the driver for Windows XP. Nothing worked.
The Iomega zip 100 (type 1) USB\VID Code consists of a few parts that is relative to the hardware. The "USB\VID _" is the first part of the number that relates to the manufacturer, Iomega has the USB\VID code of USB\VID_059B. The individual part identification code for this device is the "&PID_" number, in this case it is Zip 100 (Type 1) PID_0001 which is a Zip 100 (Type 1) device. If the usb device is not working or seems very slow then it is likely that the driver is not installed correctly, old or broken. I have an old Iomega Zip USB Drive and cartridges. It is all well kept, except I don't have the drivers. Would love to have Mac drivers or even windows one will do. I downloaded the ones from Vogon Vintage Driver Library but nothing seems to happen after installation. They don't even show in Device Manager (I am not conversant much with Windows). The Zip Cartridges I have contain old portfolio files I would love to access. Any help would be appreciated.
mac may be for old macs and not osxI have cd's with iomegaware 2.8 but that is from the os8 erascour the earth for omegawarefor the 250meg drive,mine has the click of deaththe 100meg works but to puny for any storage uses.
If your USB drive isn't detected as new hardware, there's a hardware problem. I'm not sure if you absolutely need drivers, or if recent (XP+) Windows versions would use the generic USB disk class drivers. Assuming the drive works... Either way, it should at least be detected by the OS, if not enabled for use.
I normally don't install Iomega drivers at all for any of mine, but I use the SCSI and ATAPI ones. SCSI drives work even in DOS without drivers. Well, you need your ASPI driver for the SCSI card, and ASPIDISK.SYS or equivalent... but nothing particular to the ZIP drive. ATAPI drives work in Windows natively -- at least as far as I've seen. I think, IIRC, I'm using SCSI in my DOS/Win 3.x, 95, and 98 machines, and ATAPI in Win ME, XP, and Linux.
Nowadays, given the technology is considered obsolete and the drives were limited in popularity, recovering the data from these disks could prove challenging depending on the drives you own. Many of the drivers for external models are no longer downloadable, are not supported by modern OSes, and generally make it a sad story.
If using the parallel port there are options to choose optimization levels for the zip drive, and choose which parallel port driver is used, if there is a desire to override the automatic parallel port support mechanism...
The manual install consists of 2 and possibly 3 parts on a PC. the GUEST.EXE program and the SCSI system routines. Guest is the most basic software for connecting to the ZIP drive. It attempts to install a memory resident disc driver program and find the ZIP drive on a parallel port. It is used when toting your ZIP drive to a friends computer, and is supposed to take the beach on the initial install. GUEST.EXE is all you really have to have to use a parallel port ZIP drive. The SCSI software on the PC floppy supplies drivers that can be used instead of Guest.exe with the system device (config.sys) on a PC.
However, the new Warp disc drivers can allow ejection of HPFS formatted ZIP carts from IDE or SCSI ZIP drives. There is an updated OS2DASD.DMD and a new filter called IBMATAPI.FLT that must be placed in the install directory and a line BASEDEV=IBMATAPI.FLT that must be added to config.sys. These files can be obtained from IBM under the names of "os2dasd.exe" and "removdsk.exe" at IBM Service
